VIC: Families Benefit From Free Kinder Initiative

By Pikka Turangan on May 4, 2021 4:00:00 PM

Minister of Early Childhood Ingrid Stitt has announced that close to 98 per cent of all funded kindergarten services have signed up for the Free kinder initiative. This initiative provides free Kindergarten programs in 2021 for four-year-olds and eligible three-year-old children in Victorian Government-funded services. This will support the process of recovery for families and especially women to return to work and acquire a stable routine from the pandemic.

The Victorian budget for 2020/21 delivered $169.6 million to the free kindy initiative, which on average will save around $2000 per child.

Families can benefit from Victoria's Three-Year-Old kindergarten program by providing quality education for their children as they set themselves up for big school and life.

Quality early learning before school helps young children to thrive, supports the development of the child and improves children’s achievements at school.

Research says that children who attend a kindergarten program will have a better understanding and grasp of their skills. For example, attending kinder is proven to promote independence, self-awareness, respect towards others, literacy, numeracy, verbal and non-verbal communication.

It's a critical chance for the child to maximise their opportunities and experience important milestones in their lives.

Stitt says "We're giving families one less thing to worry about and ensure children don't miss out on accessing a kinder education as Victoria recovers from the impacts of the pandemic."
